NAAFD - WTF?

Although he stepped down as president of the local NAACP nearly a year ago, Rev. Mike Latham is back in charge of a new organization: the NAAFD. Yeah, that's right, the NAAFD. Although the name is confoundingly similar to the NAACP, Latham told the Fort Wayne Journal Gazette that the NAAFD is not trying to compete. Latham says NAAFD stands for the National African-American Founders' District.

"We are not the NAACP," Latham told the Journal Gazette. "We are not trying to emulate the NAACP."

The mainstream media, ever in love with Latham's trademark "ready, shoot, aim" tactics, couldn't wait to exploit this non-news story. The truth is that the "National" African-American Founders' District as no "national" affiliations. Instead, the NAAFD appears to involve only Latham and two other supposed ministers, Victor Nelson and James Thomas, who rather immodestly call themselves "the Trinity Group." In fact, Latham  told the JG that he's not sure whether the NAAFD will be a membership organization like the NAACP.

That's probably for the best. Latham's track record in regard to membership is poor. Under more than nine-years of his leadership, the local NAACP lost membership in droves. Conversely, with less than a year under his belt, new NAACP President Rev. Bill McGill has doubled membership in the local Branch in addition to holding the local NAACP's best Freedom Fund Banquet fundraiser in more than a decade.

Money is what the community should keep its eyes on with Latham's new organization. Latham, who filed for personal bankruptcy two years ago, left the local NAACP in dubious financial shape. In addition,  a simultaneous non-profit effort, Latham's "United for A Change" Youth Group, seemingly faded from existence after collecting  tens of thousands of dollars from a collaboration with Scott's Food and Pharmacy. Initially launched as an NAACP initiative, nary a dime found its way into the NAACP's cofers. Instead, the organization was converted into a seperate entity as soon as money started rolling in. Today, no one seems to be able to account for where the money went.

As evidenced by the mass defection of NAACP members under Latham's presidency, the Black community does not recognize Rev. Mike Latham as a leader. However, some in the white community - particularly the mainstream media - love to keep Latham in the limelight.

NAAFD? Just say N.O.
